Singer, songwriter, artist, activist, and pop star, popular culture has rarely seen a talent as endlessly captivating as John Lennon.

Before being shot dead by an obsessed fan in New York City in 1980, Lennon enjoyed enormous commercial and critical success with history’s most famous rock band, The Beatles.

Starting as more of a pop group, in 1957 Lennon and The Beatles cut their teeth with marathon gigs in Hamburg and roared into into America in 1964, mobbed by rabid fans and screaming girls.

Lennon grew increasingly tired of being a pop star, and he and his fellow Beatles -- Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr -- went on to stretch the bounds of songwriting.

The band created groundbreaking album after groundbreaking album from Revolver (1966), to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) to The White Album (1968).

Lennon shared songwriting and vocal duties with bandmates, but was the group’s most polarizing figure, once observing that The Beatles were more famous than Jesus. The fact that the statement, in the sense that Lennon said it, was actually true did little to dampen the resulting controversy.

After he and The Beatles called it quits in 1969, Lennon went on to have a successful career as a solo artist and made the Grammy winning album Double Fantasy with wife and performance artist Yoko Ono.

Lennon also became known for speaking out against war and campaigning for world peace, but it is his work with The Beatles that remains some of the most influential, highly regarded, and plain old beloved music ever recorded.
