This is the major advice .In my opinion，i think the cat will helps the dog and the old man take the shoes，for the old man with the dog and cat has a good deeply relationship. the dog command the cat to fetch the old man's shoes.I guess``` the cat came to the old man with a pair of shoe in its mouth .
