Hello friends. Welcome to Window on the World. Today we'll continue our trip around Southeast Asia and visit the Lao People's Democratic Republic. It is better known as Laos. This country is bordered on the north by China and Vietnam, on the east by Vietnam, on the south by Cambodia, on the west by Thailand, and on the northwest by Myanmar. Laos is Southeast Asia's only landlocked nation. A landlocked country is one that is completely surrounded by land. The total land area is 236,800 sq km. The capital and largest city of Laos is Vientiane.
Laos is very mountainous. The country can be divided into a northern section that has very thick forests and narrow valleys. The southern section has less trees in its mountain area. The Mekong River which is the main river of Laos, enters the country in the northwest from Thailand. It then flows south along the Laos-Thailand border, and enters Cambodia in the southwest. The Mekong River is the longest river in Southeast Asia. It is 4, 184 KM long. It is used for fishing, transportation, and to make electricity.
Laos is a country that has a tropical climate. It is usually warm and rainy. The wet summer season begins in May and lasts until October. During this time, Laos receives about 1778 mm of rain. A dry, cool season begins in November and lasts until February.
We must close our Window on the World for now. Do listen next week, friends, when we'll learn all about the people of Laos. Goodbye for no
Laos - People 寮国 - 民族
Greetings, Friends! It's time for Window on the World! We are learning about the country of Laos. Today, we'll find out about the people who live there. The population of Laos is about 4,975,800 people. There are three main groups of people who make their homes in Laos. The largest group is composed of Lao, who are closely related to the Thai people. The Lao make up about half of the population. They live mainly along the Mekong River. Another group of people are called ¨Mountain People〃 and they live in the highlands. There is also a small group of Vietnamese and Chinese people who live in the northern mountains. The official language is Lao. It is very similar to the Thai and Burmese languages. Some older people may speak French. English and Vietnamese are also spoken by some people.
The people of Laos have large families. The average family may have about 7 family members. Sometimes you will find that grandparents or aunts and uncles may live with a family. The oldest man is the head of the family. He usually represents the family at village meetings. The Lao have great respect for their parents and elders. A sign of greeting and respect is called the NOP. A person will fold their hands as if they were praying and place them near the chest level. Then, bow slightly to show respect for an older person. The NOP is also used to show someone your thanks. If you were to visit a Lao home, you would remove your shoes and leave them outside the house. You should also remember to bring a small gift to your hosts when you visit.
It is time to close our Window on the World. The people of Laos are very interesting. Next week, we'll find out about the foods that they enjoy. I hope you will listen. Goodbye for now.
Laos - Food 寮国 - 食物
Hello, friends. Let's open our Window on the World again on Laos. We have learned about the land, climate and people. Today, let's find out about their food. The main food for our friends in Laos is rice. Most Asian people do enjoy eating rice with their meals. Rice is the main crop that is grown in Laos. The rice is usually served with chili sauce or a spicy fish sauce. Much of the food is very spicy. One dish you might want to try is called LAP. It is meat that is cooked with onions, lemon grass, (a lemon-tasting herb), and other spices. Other foods that are eaten include fish, eggs, chicken, pork, and occasionally, beef. Popular beverages are coffee and tea.If you were to visit a home in Laos, you would sit on a mat on the floor to eat. As a sign of respect for you as their guest, the host and family would not raise their heads higher than yours. They never want to offend anyone. Most Lao eat using a fork in their left hand and a spoon in their right hand. They do often eat rice with their fingers.
I hope you have learned something new today about Laos. Next week we'll find out about the many different animals that live in Laos.
Goodbye for now, friends. I'll be waiting for you!
Laos - Animals 寮国 - 动物
Hello, friends! Welcome to Window on the World. This is our last week to find out about the country of Laos. Today, we'll find out about the many animals that live in the forest-covered mountains of Laos. The Asian elephant is found here and also in other Southeast Asian countries. Did you know that an elephant can gather food for about 18 hours a day? It can eat about 150 kg of fruit and leaves. Elephants usually live for about 40 years. The rain forests are also the home for panthers, leopards, tigers and wild boars. You could also see interesting birds like the falcon, the osprey, and the great spotted woodpecker. If you are interested in snakes, you will find 2 rather large ones in Laos. The largest venomous snake is the King Cobra. Venomous snakes are deadly because of the poison in their fangs. The King Cobra can grow to be about 5 meters long. I know I will stay away from the King Cobra because it is able to strike or attack its victim from a distance! Another snake found in Laos is the Indian Python. This snake is known as a constrictor. It means that it will kill its prey by squeezing it to death. Once the animal is dead, the python will then swallow it. The Indian Python is able to kill an animal as large as a goat and then swallow it! That sounds like a very strong snake! I really don't like snakes so I will be sure to stay away from the rain forests of Laos! It is time to close our Window on the World for today. I hope you have learned many interesting things about Laos. Do listen again next week as we continue to find out about another country in Southeast Asia. Farewell, friends! Bump up~~~ 谢谢版主。您提供的东东太棒了。非常感谢你。柬埔寨 - 地理 Cambodia - Land
Welcome to Window on the World. I hope you are well, friends. This week we will learn about Cambodia, another Southeast Asian country. The country's official name is the Kingdom of Cambodia. Cambodia's neighbors are Laos on the northeast, Vietnam on the east and southeast, the Gulf of Thailand is on the southwest, and Thailand is on the west and northwest. The land of Cambodia is flat in the central part of the country. There are mountains in the southwest near the flat area, called a plain. The Mekong River flows from north to south through Cambodia. A large lake called the "Great Lake" is in the center of the country. The climate of Cambodia is very warm and tropical. It has a rainy season that begins in April and continues until October. The average temperature is about 25 degrees celsius. The average rainfall can be about 1,400 millimeters in the plains to about 3,800 millimeters in the mountains. Next week, we'll learn about the Cambodian people. I hope you will join us then when we open our Window on the World. Goodbye for now, friends.柬埔寨 - 民族 Cambodia - People

The bonds of love formed through adoption are very important. Visiting is encouraged by relatives but Cambodians are careful when inviting stangers into their homes. If you are invited to visit, be sure to remove your shoes when you enter the home. As a houseguest you may be greeted with a bouquet of jasmine flowers. Guests are given the best place to sit. Greetings friends. Welcome to Window on the World. We have been learning about Cambodia. This week we will find out about the foods that the Cambodian people enjoy. Many Cambodians are farmers and they grow much of their own food. Some things they grow are rice, maize, corn, and vegetables. If you were to eat a meal in a Cambodian home, you might enjoy soup and rice. A bowl of soup may have any combination of fish, eggs, vegetables, meat, and spices. More than 20 years ago, Cambodia was known as "the cradle of rice," and many different varieties were grown. Rice is prepared in many ways and is eaten at every meal. Vegetables and a wide variety of fruits are available throughout the year. Seafood and fish are also common. Cambodians eat with chopsticks, spoons, and their fingers, depending on the food. Cambodian food is less spicy than in neighboring countries like Thailand.I think I might enjoy the Cambodian foods since they are not very spicy. Learning more about other countries on Window on the World is very interesting to me. I hope you are also learning many new things. Please join me next week when we find out about the animals of Cambodia. Goodbye, for now, friends. Good article:)

Welcome to Window on the World. Today we will travel to an archipelago. Have you ever heard that word before? An archipelago is a chain of islands and the one we will learn about is the Republic of the Philippines. There are more than 7100 islands that make up the Philippines. The chain of islands is 1600 kilometers long and 480 kilometers wide. There are eleven large islands and the two largest are Luzon in the north and Mindanao, in the south. The islands are surrounded by the waters of the Philippine Sea, the Celebes Sea and the South China Sea. The capital of this country is Manila and many people live in this large city. The Philippine Islands are located in an area that is called the "Ring of Fire" because of the many volcanoes that are there. The islands were formed by volcanoes many years ago. There are about 20 active volcanoes in the Philippines today. The islands also experience earthquakes. The many mountains give the country a beautiful landscape. The highest mountain is Mount Apo which rises 2953 meters in the air. The climate is very tropical because the Philippines is close to the equator. It usually rains year round. They do have 2 seasons- a dry season and a rainy season. Heavy rains, called monsoons often cause flooding. Typhoons can also cause problems with the strong winds and rains. If you plan to visit our friends in the Philippines, be sure to travel during the drier season to enjoy sunny days. Next time, when we open our Window on the World, we'll learn about the friendly Filipino people. Goodbye for now. Adios!菲律宾 - 民族 Philippines - People
Hello! "Kumusta Ka Na?" How are you? That is how our friends in the Philippines might greet you. Today, our Window on the World opens again on the archipelago of the Philippines. Let's find out about the people who live there. The people today have been greatly influenced by others who lived on the islands. Malaysian, Spanish and Americans had traveled to the Philippines long ago. The Spanish had even ruled the Philippines for about 330 years. You can see the Spanish influence in the last names of the people today. 1998 marks the 100th anniversary of the Philippines' independence from Spanish rule. The most important thing to the Filipino people today is having a strong family. Children are taught to be very loyal to their families. Each family member loves and cares for the others. Children show great respect to their parents and grandparents. They always try to bring honor to their family. Education is also very important to the Filipino people. All children must go to school from the age of seven until they are twelve. Many continue on to high school and college. The students enjoy sports like baseball, basketball and "sipa" a game like volleyball but played using their feet and not their hands. Another favorite past time is going to the movies. The Filipinos have a very large movie making industry. Can you believe there are more than 100 movie theaters in Manila? If you like to have fun and eat lots of great foods, you could also go to a fiesta. We'll find out more about the foods next time when we open our Window on the World. Until next week, farewell friends!菲律宾 - 食物 Philippines - Food

Hello again and welcome to Window on the World. Each week we find out interesting things about different countries around the world. Today we will learn about the people from the Republic of Korea which is also known as South Korea. About one-quarter of all South Koreans live in the capital, Seoul. A small group of Chinese people do live in South Korea but the rest of the population is made up of Koreans. The population is about 45 million people. The main language is Korean. The language uses numerous Chinese words. Older people may also speak Japanese as a second language. The family is bound together by a strong sense of duty and obligation among its members. The father is the head of the family; he and the eldest son receive the greatest respect. The elderly members of a family are also shown great respect. Sons are expected to take care of their aging parents.
When you meet someone from South Korea, you will receive the traditional greeting, a gentle nod. A slight bow would show respect, too. Sometimes a nod is often followed by a handshake. The left hand may support or rest under the right forearm during the handshake to show respect. Women shake hands less often than men. Young children bow or nod when greeting adults. A common greeting is Annyong haseyo?, which means "Are you at peace?". Young children often greet each other with a simple Annyong?
If you are invited into a home in South Korea, you should remove your shoes upon entering. You might find that in traditional Korean homes guests are seated on cushions on floors that are heated from below. Men sit cross-legged and women tuck their legs to one side behind them. The guest receives the warmest or best position. Guests invited for a meal or party usually bring a small gift in appreciation, often something that can be served at the gathering. Refreshments are usually served, and it is impolite to refuse them.
The South Korean people do enjoy sports. Soccer and baseball are the most popular spectator sports. Koreans also enjoy boxing, basketball, golf, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. This is strips of tasty marinated and then barbecued beef. Barley tea is served with most meals. Fruit is popular as a dessert. If you were invited to a meal, you would most likely use chopsticks to eat with. Chopsticks and spoons are the most commonly used utensils. It is time for Window on the World. I am so glad you are listening today. We have been learning about the country of South Korea. Here are some interesting facts about the animals you might find there.Several animals that can be found in South Korea also live in other Asian countries. One large cat that we have found in this region is the leopard. The leopard is remarkably accepting of people, but people donˇt seem to appreciate leopards. They like to eat goats, sheep, and dogs and that makes farmers angry. Hunters often try to kill the leopards because of their splendid spotted coats. They are beautiful but dangerous wild cats.
Another animal found here is the Asian Black Bear. This bear also lives in Cambodia and Vietnam. This is the bear that is sometimes called the moon bear because of the white moon shape on their chests. The Asian Black Bear is an endangered animal and should be protected.
A small deer from northern and eastern Asia that does not have antlers is called the musk deer. It has small tusks in place of antlers. The musk deerˇs large hind legs make it extremely quick. It can leap high and make sharp turns while running. The musk deer is nocturnal. A nocturnal animal always sleeps in the day time and eats at night. Musk deer eat grass, moss, small branches and twigs.
There are several large birds that live in South Korea. One is the Oriental White Stork. It is also known as the eastern white stork. This large bird stands a little over 1 meter tall and can fly as fast as 77 kilometers per hour. It lives in open country and forests in Asia and mainly eats fish, frogs, snails, and small rodents. This bird is also an endangered animal. Another large bird you might find in South Korea is the Whooper Swan. Although this bird is very graceful on the water, the heavy whooper swan requires long stretches of open water to take off and land, and it moves poorly in the air. It makes a bugle-like call when flying. The Whooper Swan eats mostly plants that grow in the water but will also eat tadpoles and small fish.
The animals of South Korea have been very interesting. I hope you have enjoyed learning about South Korea. Join us next week when we open our Window on the World again.
