源自《圣经·旧约·诗篇》第17章，Keep me as the apple of eye. (求你保护我，如同保护眼中的瞳孔。)另《申命记》第32章也出现He kept him as the apple of his eye. (保护他如同保护眼中的瞳孔。) 现译：“掌上明珠”，表示特别珍视的东西。
例如：
His youngest son was the apple of his eye.
他的小儿子是他的心肝宝贝。
