Improve Your Vocabulary Skills

A lot of people would love to go about improving their vocabulary skills but do not know how. There are some very simple and practical strategies you can use to improve one's vocabulary.

Improving vocabulary skills requires some creativity and the right strategy. Improving vocabulary skills is not an easy task by itself because vocabulary is abstract and often times there is very little connection between what the word means and what the word is. The connection is only formed once the word is incorporated into one's vocabulary - and this is how improving vocabulary skills fits into the picture.

You cannot expect to understand words with merely the definition attributed to them in dictionaries - dictionaries may be practical tools for improving vocabulary skills, but at the end of the day you have to realize that the same word has evolved over years and takes on new dimensions in every new context that it is used in.

Improving vocabulary skills will enable you to place the same word in different contexts and still make them appropriate for that context - such is the power of a great vocabulary. This can happen by improving vocabulary skills with the gradual process of using words more and more, until they are incorporated into the vocabulary. As the words are used, they are memorized and become a part of the vocabulary - this is a great technique for improving vocabulary skills.

Once the word is a part of your memory the process of building a great vocabulary has been set in motion. To improve vocabulary skills, try this technique: be certain that you have perceived a particular word (that you are trying to incorporate into your vocabulary) and then connect it with something you know from before. You can read a new word several times but never really incorporate it, and merely reading a new word won't do a thing to improving vocabulary skills, but using this useful technique definitely will, as long as you apply it effectively enough.

Even if you recognize the word later, it is simply not enough. To improve vocabulary skills, you ought to know what the word sounds like when spoken aloud and how it is spelled when written down. Both phonetic (sound) and visual (sight) components need to be present if a new word is to be incorporated into the vocabulary, and for improving vocabulary skills.

To incorporate the word phonetically, read it first, look in another direction (away from the page) and say it out loud. Then check the page where it is written down to see if you have said it in the correct manner. To incorporate it visually, look carefully at how the word is spelled, then close your eyes and think about each letter. Once you have done so, say the spelling of the word aloud, first in the right way and then backwards.

If you spelled it correctly then you have successfully incorporated the word, thereby improving vocabulary skills. For improving vocabulary skills further, connect the new word to something it reminds you of - something you are already very familiar and comfortable with. For the sake of improving vocabulary skills, this object should be easily imaginable, and the best way to do is to pick something that immediately springs to mind because chances are that you will always make that instinctive association. This is an easy and effective way for improving vocabulary skills.

thank you
