AFather had a family of sons who were perpetually（持久的）quarrellingamong themselves. When he failed to heal their disputesby his exhortations（劝告）, hedetermined to give them a practical illustration（说明）of theevils of disunion（不团结）; and for this purpose he one daytold them to bring him a bundle（一捆）of sticks. When theyhad done so, he placed the faggot（捆柴） into the handsof each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They eachtried with all their strength, and were not able to do it. He next unclosed thefaggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them intotheir hands, on which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in thesewords: “My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite toassist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts ofyour enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken aseasily as these sticks.”
