An ounce of discretion is worth a pound of learning .
　　一分辨别力抵过十分学问。
　　本谚语初见于17世纪初的文献中，也有人将discretion换成mother
wit ,将learning换成wit 或 clergy的。这里的ounce（盎司）与pound（
磅）指的应是重量单位，1盎司合31.104克，1磅约合373克，也就是说1盎司
等于1/2磅。这样说来，辨别力（判断力）的价值便是学问（或知识）的
12倍，表示辨别力远比学问重要。英国人似乎很喜欢”An ounce of A is
worth a pound of B”的说法，A与B的地方可填上fortune 与
forecast;mirth 与sorrow；practice与precept等相对照的名词。
