听到这样的对话，美国人会哈哈大笑，作为中国人觉得有点真摸不着头脑。文化差异有时使我们难以领会美国的幽默，其实上述对话是个玩笑“为什么说厨师刻薄？” “因为他们’打’鸡蛋还’抽’奶油。”。这就是英语里的双关。



“What has four wheels and flies?” “A garbage truck.”

“什么东西有四个轮子和苍蝇（如果译作飞机就不好笑啦）？” “垃圾车。”


“What did the mayonnaise say to the refrigerator?” “Close the door! I’m dressing.”
dressing不仅有穿衣的意思，还有敷料、调味品的意思，而蛋黄酱确是一种美国人喜欢敷在蔬菜沙拉上的调料。所以这个笑话是利用了dressing的双关语义。直译：“蛋黄酱和冰箱说了什么？” “关上门！我是调料。”。 双关意：“蛋黄酱和冰箱说了什么？” “关上门！我在穿衣服。”
“What did the ocean say to the shore?” “Nothing; it just waved.” 哈哈哈哈……
