In January 2000 Herman and Candelaria Zapp from North Carolina, USA, set off in their 83-year-old vintage car. Eleven years later, they have racked up up 142,000 miles and visited 24 countries, while becoming parents to (from left) Paloma, Tehue, Wallaby and Pampa.

Former IT specialist Herman, 42, and his wife Candelaria, 40, set off from Argentina in a 1928 Graham-Paige car and began driving across South and North America.

"We were happy, we had everything a young couple could want, but we felt we had to go," said Herman. "My grandfather knew that we wanted to travel and to never stop so he gave me the old Graham-Paige car he used on his farm and gave me some advice. He told me, 'If you want to get far, you need to go slowly', so what could be better than a vintage car?"

"Our first 'voyage' destination was to drive from Argentina to Alaska, but we don't plan our routes. The only stipulation we have to stick to is that our 83-year old car can't travel on main motorways because it can't go faster than 40 mph." Above, Herman and Candelaria Zapp pose with baby Pampa in Alaska as they finish the first leg of their journey around the world in 2002.

Each of their children has a different nationality with Pampa being born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Tehue born in Argentina, Paloma a native of Vancouver Island and little Wallaby obviously from Australia.

Each night the Zapps either sleep in or around a tent set up next to their car, but more often than not they find a friendly local who will put them up for the night. Candelaria (above) feeds the family in 2009 in the Western Australian outback

The couple insist they are educating their children in usual school subjects during their travels as well as giving them amazing life experience. "What better way is there for my children to be educated than to see the world?" said Herman

"They see the kangaroo jump and a grizzly bear roar in their natural environment. My children have seen the space shuttle take off and have learnt different words in different languages and experienced so many different cultures"

The Zapps have produced a book called Spark Your Dream which helps to fund the essentials like food and petrol
