The Roman Catholic Church has welcomed a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that the display of crucifixes in state schools is acceptable. The Vaticandescribed the ruling as "historic", saying the crosses were an expression of the cultural and religious identity of traditionally Christian countries.A woman in Italy had complained that crucifixes at a local school violated secular principles and were discriminatory.
