-I got a few bags which were about £200 and I got them for about 30 quid
-I just bought a new computer last week…
-I get to do my birthday shopping during the sales so I particularly enjoy them…
Finn: Those are some of the people we talked to around central London.
Yang Li: We asked them what was the best bargain they’ve ever had.
Finn: And also what they're hoping to get this January. Don’t be surprised if you hear more women than men on today’s programme. Hello I am Finn.
Are you one of those people who shop till you drop?
Yang Li:

I just bought a new computer last week, but I’m not a big shopper so I just tend to buy a few items of clothing in January…
I got a few bags which were about £200 and I got them for about 30 quid, so that was a pretty good bargain!.... I was very happy because of the brand and because of the price. I can’t normally afford that brand, so for me it was excellent…
Maybe the coat I’ve got on. I saw it full price, didn’t want to buy it so waited for the sales and it was 40% off…

A real bargain.
Finn: A real bargain is often a combination of a brand at a reduced price.
Yang Li: 品牌 a brand, 削价 reduced price.
Finn: Let’s listen back again. This time pay attention to the following words: tend to buy,倾向于买什么,and afford 花得起。

My birthday’s in January so it always comes in handy. You know, I get to do my birthday shopping during the sales, so I particularly enjoy them… I go out with my girlfriends, and get to spend that time splurging on birthday things so I don't know, it depends what we do on that day!

Finn: 很方便 come in handy.

They have about 50% off I think. I normally go for the sales which are like everything 50% or 20% off. I don’t like going for the ones where it’s buy one, get one free or selected items, because by the time you go there it’s always over, so what's the point?
I’ve got an eye on a few things, I’ve got an eye on some boots that I’m hoping will be reduced to half-price, and a few other things, like a purse I’ve seen. So yeah, I do tend to scout for things that I want and I’ll just wait for the sales.
Boots, gloves, winter stuff, not jackets. They never slash the prices too much for them, so usually winter wear.
Finn: There are some useful phrases you can learn to talk about sales: Buy one, get one free.
Not a bad deal.
Finn: Not a bad deal. To have an eye on, for example to have an eye on some boots.
Yeah, I do tend to scout for things that I want and I’ll just wait for the sales.

Yang Li:
Finn: Or, to scout for things.
Yang Li: To scout 就是寻找搜索那些好东西 to scout for things.
Finn: And also, to slash the price.
Yang Li: 大砍价, 大幅度地削价就是 to slash the price.
Finn: Good, well let's learn them because they might come in handy.
Yang Li: Come in handy, Well our website will also come in handy if you know this address:
Finn: www.bbcukchina.com. Until next time... bye bye.
Li: Bye.
