Laos - Land 寮国 - 地理
Hello friends. Welcome to Window on the World. Today we'll continue our trip around Southeast Asia and visit the Lao People's Democratic Republic. It is better known as Laos. This country is bordered on the north by China and Vietnam, on the east by Vietnam, on the south by Cambodia, on the west by Thailand, and on the northwest by Myanmar. Laos is Southeast Asia's only landlocked nation. A landlocked country is one that is completely surrounded by land. The total land area is 236,800 sq km. The capital and largest city of Laos is Vientiane.
Laos is very mountainous. The country can be divided into a northern section that has very thick forests and narrow valleys. The southern section has less trees in its mountain area. The Mekong River which is the main river of Laos, enters the country in the northwest from Thailand. It then flows south along the Laos-Thailand border, and enters Cambodia in the southwest. The Mekong River is the longest river in Southeast Asia. It is 4, 184 KM long. It is used for fishing, transportation, and to make electricity.
Laos is a country that has a tropical climate. It is usually warm and rainy. The wet summer season begins in May and lasts until October. During this time, Laos receives about 1778 mm of rain. A dry, cool season begins in November and lasts until February.
We must close our Window on the World for now. Do listen next week, friends, when we'll learn all about the people of Laos. Goodbye for no
