What Does Alibaba's Announcement Mean for Yahoo?

Yahoo owns a roughly 40% stake in Alibaba, representing perhaps half of Yahoo's $19.6 billion market value.

An important relationship indeed, but one that has been strained beyond belief. Yahoo said they were blindsided by the move of Alibaba Group and its Chairman, Jack Ma, to shift ownership of Alipay, one of the Alibaba business units. For his part, Ma said ‘Yahoo and another big Alibaba investor, Japan's Softbank,’engaged in stalling tactics' as members of the Alibaba board, and were wrong about the Alipay controversy.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster today said the possibility of Alibaba going public is a relative non-event financially, but a good sign of détente between Alibaba and its partners:
