Somali temporary president Abdullahi Yusuf was unharmed when a bomb exploded near the parliament building in Baidoa Monday. Somalia's foreign minister has blamed the attack on al-Qaeda terrorists. A bomber attacked the president vehicles as they drove past the parliament building. The explosion killed five people in the vehicles including President Yusuf's brother. Officials say security forces killed six suspected attackers in a gun battle. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the Islamic group that rules Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia condemned the attack. President Bush is expected to talk about Middle East democracy when he speaks to United Nation General Assembly in New York Tuesday. The systems say Mr. Bush recalled for help in supporting democracies in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestinian territories.  He is also expected to use the speech to defend his position on Iran.

Bomb attacks and shootings across Iraq have killed at least forty-one people. Police say one bomb has killed at least twenty people and wounded seventeen others in Tal Afar, north of Baghdad. In Ramadi, a bomb that exploded in a car killed thirteen people. Several more bodies that showed signs of torture have been found in Baghdad. Tribal leaders in Anbar province have been organizing to fight the resistance in Iraq. They have asked the Iraqi government for support for a fighting force of twenty thousand men. The United States military announced that two coalition soldiers were killed Sunday in Baghdad. In Washington, the United States military defended the arrest of an Iraqi who works for the Associated Press. Officials said there were signs that he had strong links to rebels.

In Afghanistan, three bomb attacks have killed at least four NATO soldiers and fifteen other people. The four soldiers were from Canada. They were killed as they gave out school supplies to a group of children. A bicycle carrying a bomb drove into the crowd and exploded. At least, ten soldiers and twenty-five children were injured. Also Monday, another man riding a bicycle exploded a bomb and killed at least ten people in the western Afghan city of Heart. Police said the bomber's target was a top police officer. In Kabul, another bomb explosion killed three policemen and wounded another.

NASA says a spill of a poison on the international space station set off a short-term emergency on Monday. The space agency also said the lives of the crew members were never in danger. Officials say the emergency will not affect the planned arrival of the Russian Soyuz rocket on Wednesday. The Russian space vehicle is carrying an Iranian-American woman. She is the first female to pay to travel in space for fun.
