
上世纪80年代之前出生的人大部分都经历过“一件衣服两代穿,贵重家什代代传”的时期,英文里这种传下来的旧衣服叫做“hand-me-down”。现在的年轻人没有几个会愿意穿爸妈或哥哥姐姐的旧衣服了,反而是年轻人衣物更新换代频繁,而上一辈人都不忍看着好好的东西被丢弃,于是就出现了与“hand-me-down”完全相反的物品继承模式,也就是由下传上,即“hand-me-up”。

Linda: Hi, Susan. You look beautiful today! It’s a new coat, isn’t it?
Susan: Yes. I bought it last Sunday.
Linda: How about the green one? The one we bought together last year?
Susan: Oh, I gave it to my mother.
Linda: So it has become a “hand-me-up”!
