上世纪80年代之前出生的人大部分都经历过“一件衣服两代穿，贵重家什代代传”的时期，英文里这种传下来的旧衣服叫做“hand-me-down”。现在的年轻人没有几个会愿意穿爸妈或哥哥姐姐的旧衣服了，反而是年轻人衣物更新换代频繁，而上一辈人都不忍看着好好的东西被丢弃，于是就出现了与“hand-me-down”完全相反的物品继承模式，也就是由下传上，即“hand-me-up”。


For example:


Linda: Hi, Susan. You look beautiful today! It’s a new coat, isn’t it?

Susan: Yes. I bought it last Sunday.

Linda: How about the green one? The one we bought together last year?

Susan: Oh, I gave it to my mother.

Linda: So it has become a “hand-me-up”!

I don't like put on a "hand-me-down" and I won't let my clothes become a "hand-me-up".

Me too. Bought too many clothes is no good,so ,you'll let those clothes become"hand-me-down"in the next season

    The meaning of "hand-me-up" is give your clothes to your parents or whose was older than you.And the meaning of " hand-me-down"is wearing the older people's clothes.
