Major Wins Third TV Million

An Army officer last night became the third contestant to win the top prize on British "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? "

Major Charles Ingram hit the jackpot when asked: "What is the name of a number that is a one followed by 100 zeros?"

Charles, a dad of three from Wiltshire, correctly answered "googol" to land the cash on Chris Tarrant's hit ITV quiz.

The show will be screened next Tuesday.

Yet earlier the audience had gasped as he floundered on questions.

He used his Phone A Friend and Ask The Audience lifelines as he struggled to reach£4,000.

Audience member Andrew Silke, 22, said: "He kept changing his mind and going through all the answers.

"His wife was watching and she had been on the show in a previous series. He kept saying he wanted to equal the£32,000 she got."

A source at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Herts, confirmed the win, saying: "There is a massive security clampdown."

Charles dashed straight home after collecting his cheque.

A source at the after-show party said: "I asked someone why the winner wasn't joining us for a drink.

"He said it was because he had to be at work in the morning and drop his kids at school."

The previous winners were Judith Keppel, a distant cousin of Camilla Parker Bowles, and teacher David Edwards.
