6月9日,联合国秘书长科菲·安南再度呼吁,2005年对世界贫穷国家来说是一个不成则败的关键时刻,他敦促富国加快对穷国援助,扩大贸易并减免债务。外电报道如下:Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday called 2005 "a make-or-break moment" for the world's poor and urged all rich nations to follow the European Union and boost aid, improve trade and provide debt relief.
With more than 1 billion people living on less than $1 a day, 815 million having too little to eat, and more than 115 million children not going to elementary school, he said U.N. development goals won't be met unless world leaders take "concrete steps" this year.

Annan didn't single out any countries but his message was clearly aimed at the United States and Japan, which have so far refused to set timetables to increase aid to 0.7 percent of national incomes - as all 25 EU nations have pledged to do by 2015. The United States currently contributes about 0.17 percent while Japan next year will spend 0.21 percent.

  Make-or-break表示“不成则败的,获得极大成功或者完全失败的”,例如:a make-or-break investment plan(成败系于一线的投资计划)。

Many new words are there for me, such as " single out", but now I know, ha ha, thanks.

The twin attacks on the twin towers came without warning and just minutes 1)apart.
As a local television anchor interviewed an 2)eyewitness to the first crash, a second 3)hijacked 4)jetliner 5)roared into the south tower of the 110-story structure, sending a fireball and clouds of smoke in the sky over New York. "Six or seven floors were taken out and hold on," says one eyewitness. "The building has exploded! You've got people running up the street, let me find out what is going on. Okay, the whole building just exploded, the whole top part. The building is still intact. People are running up the street. Am I still connected?"
Later, both World Trade Towers collapsed, sending 6)untold numbers of people to their deaths. Fire and rescue crews rushed into lower Manhattan to aid the 7)victims as a thick plume of dark gray smoke 8)drifted south of the city, a 9)plume that could be seen from many kilometers away in neighboring New Jersey.
Later in the day, a 47-story building also part of the World Trade Center also collapsed in the 10)aftermath of the terrorist attack.
Hospitals in New York stood by for casualties and an immediate appeal for blood donations was quickly answered by thousands of New Yorkers who lined up to donate, eager to do something in the midst of the 11)carnage.
Pedestrians in New York City flee as first World Trade Center tower collapses Manhattan was closed off to incoming traffic and New Yorkers trying to flee the city used any means they could find, including walking over some of the city's famous bridges to try to reach home.
This is not the first time the World Trade Center was the target of a terrorist attack. A truck bomb rocked the complex in 1993, killing six people and wounding hundreds. Six Islamic militants convicted of that attack are now serving life terms in prison.
