好朋友 Best Friends (Part 1)
Do you have someone whom you consider your best friend? Dave does. Dave's best friend is Phil. Dave and Phil are both 10 years old. They go to the same school and have known each other ever since they were three years old. Dave's mother and Phil's mother are good friends and spent a lot of time together when Dave and Phil were young. That is how Dave and Phil became good friends too.
Phil is about four feet tall. He has dark hair, brown eyes and a very wide smile. Phil is a very adventurous person, and he likes sports. His favorite sports are basketball and soccer. Phil is good at those sports. Dave likes basketball and soccer too. Dave is slightly taller than Phil and he has blond hair, blue eyes, and freckles on his cheeks. They are both in the school basketball and soccer teams. Phil is so good that he is the captain of the basketball team, as well as the soccer team.
Phil likes adventures. Phil often likes to go exploring in places that they have never been to before. However, Dave is not as adventurous as Phil. Usually, he will follow Phil on his adventures, but will keep a safe distance as Phil sometimes does really dangerous things.
However something happened on one of these adventures that changed everything...

Phil and Dave spend a lot of time hanging out with each other after school. One day, they went to their favorite soda shop after school. After ordering a milkshake and soda, they sat at their usual table. They liked that table because it was facing the road, and they could see people go by. They liked to guess what each person's occupation was by the way he or she dressed. On that day, there were very few people walking past the soda shop. They were feeling a little bored and were trying to think of what to do for the rest of the afternoon.
Dave suggested going to the arcade, but Phil did not have enough money. The weather was also too hot to go for a swim. They had seen all the latest movies, and were getting bored with the computer games they had at home.
They were about to go home when suddenly, Phil's attention was drawn to a man standing outside the shop. The man was dressed head-to-toe in black, and he was wearing dark glasses which hid his eyes from their view. He was carrying a black bag in his right hand, and he kept looking at the watch on his left wrist. He seemed to be waiting for someone.
Phil's eyes were lit with curiosity and excitement. Dave could sense that Phil was up to something...

Before any of them could say anything, another man walked past the cafe, carrying another bag. In the split second that the two men passed each other, they exchanged bags and walked off in opposite directions without saying a word to each other. If Dave and Phil had not been looking so hard, they would not have noticed that the men had switched bags.
Phil and Dave looked at each other, their eyes wide open in amazement.
Phil decided to follow them. He jumped up from his chair and ran out of the shop. Dave ran after him and caught up with him at the door. The men were gone. Phil looked up and down the street. He saw one of the men turn the corner and ran off after the man.
Dave was left standing outside the shop, not knowing what to do. He looked around, hoping for some inspiration when suddenly, he noticed a piece of paper between his feet. He bent down slowly and picked it up. It was a map of some kind, torn from a book.
At first, he could not figure out where it was, until he noticed that the soda shop was circled in red. It was a map of the town, with the surrounding forested areas included.
What could those two men be up to?

Dave ran after Phil to show him the map. Phil had not yet gotten too far away. He heard Dave and he came running back. Dave panted and handed the map to Phil. Phil looked surprised and grabbed it from Dave. They both studied the map for a few minutes, and then noticed that there was another marking on the map somewhere in the forested area, outside the town.
Phil decided to follow the map to the area in the woods, but before Dave could say a word in protest, Phil was already heading towards that location in the forest that was indicated by the mark on the map.
Dave tried to talk Phil out of it, but Phil did not seem to hear him. He just kept walking and looking at the map, and mumbling to himself. Dave shouted at him, but all he did was turn around, signal Dave to keep quiet, and then turned back and continued walking.
By now, it was getting rather late in the afternoon and the sun was about to set. Dave was getting a bad feeling about the whole thing, but Phil just kept on going.
They stumbled on as darkness slowly fell. It became harder and harder to see where they were going. Suddenly, there was a light in the distance. It seemed dim at first, but slowly became brighter as they got nearer. It was a small wooden hut. There was nobody around. They crept slowly and quietly across, and peeked into the window.

The hut was bare except for a small wooden table and a few chairs around it. On the table, there was an old oil lamp, some empty beer bottles and dirty dishes. It looked like someone was there earlier, but had left. Phil started to crawl towards the front door. Dave hissed at him to stop.
As usual, Phil did not listen to Dave. He was already at the front door. With a sigh, Dave followed slowly behind him. Phil pushed open the front door slowly. It gave a loud creak with its old rusty hinges. They stopped and held their breaths. There was silence in the cold evening air. Not a sound. Not even a breeze to rustle the leaves in the trees. The night was still and quiet, and getting quite cold. Phil continued to push the door slowly till there was a gap. He looked in the gap, and then pushed it open wider. He stuck his head in and looked around. He turned back and motioned for Dave to follow him in.
Dave hesitated, but he did not want to be left outside all by himself so he had no choice but to crawl in after Phil. As they got through the doorway, they both stopped suddenly as they saw what was under the table...

There was a huge hole in the ground, right in the middle of the hut. It was just big enough for a man to go through. The table was covering it, which was why they did not see it earlier. It seemed as though someone, or some people have been digging the hole. But for what purpose?
Phil and Dave decided to head back to town to inform the police, but before they could do anything, they heard footsteps coming towards the hut. There was no other way out of the hut except the door. Phil started to panic. It was very unlike him. Without thinking, Dave grabbed Phil and they both jumped into the hole under the table.
They heard voices from above as two people entered the hut. It was two men. Suddenly, one of the men stopped talking. He had noticed two sets of footprints belonging to smaller shoes.
Phil and Dave looked at each other in horror. Of course! The ground outside was muddy. They had left footprints everywhere!
Dave and Phil were really in trouble. The men knew that the boys were in the hut, and the footprints led directly to the table. It would not take them long to realize that they were hiding in the hole, because there was nowhere else in the hut that could have hidden two boys.
The sound of footsteps came closer to where Dave and Phil were hiding...

Dave looked around the hole that they were in, desperate for a solution, but there seemed to be none. Phil leaned back in despair. Suddenly, the side of the hole that he was leaning against gave way. It was covered up by a thin wooden board with dirt and soil on one side to disguise it. They looked in the gap and discovered a tunnel. The two men were digging a tunnel!
The boys quickly crawled into the tunnel and covered it back up with the board. The tunnel was pitch dark and they could not even see their own hands. They used their hands to feel their way forward.
They never stopped to think where the tunnel would lead them. They just crawled as fast as they could to get away from the two men. Behind them, they could hear voices as the two men realized that there was no one in the hole, and that the boys had gone down the tunnel.
One of the men tried to follow Dave and Phil down the hole but he seemed to be having difficulties. He shouted at them to stop, but they went even faster. He could not go as fast as the boys because he was bigger than them, and he could just about fit in the tunnel. Dave started to wonder where the other man was, since only one of them was following Phil and himself.
After a long time, they came to the end of the tunnel. The man was catching up behind them, but there was no way to continue.

Phil asked Dave to hurry as he could hear the man getting closer. Dave felt his way around and his hand touched a metal bar that was drilled into the wall of the tunnel. There was another one higher up, and yet another. They were railings which led upwards like a ladder!
Dave grabbed hold of them and started climbing up. He had no idea where he was headed. He just wanted to get out of the tunnel.
Soon, he came to the top of the tunnel but the opening was covered. He pushed at the cover. It was heavy, but it soon opened. Phil was just behind him. Dave crawled out of the tunnel and started to pull Phil up. Their eyes adjusted to the surroundings, and they looked around and realized they were in some kind of cave. Suddenly, there was a shout.
It was the other man. They had intended to trap Phil and Dave in the tunnel by coming at them from both ends.
Phil and Dave started to run. Suddenly, Phil tripped and fell on the rocky ground, with the second man fast approaching...

Dave helped him up and they continued running, but Phil could only hobble along as his leg was injured.
Phil asked Dave to run and get help while he tried to slow the men down. Dave could see that Phil was in pain and he hesitated, but realized that it was the only way to get help.
With that, Phil turned away from Dave and went back to where the second guy was coming towards them. Dave continued running. Behind him, he could hear Phil struggling with the man. Dave ran even faster.
The cave was rather dark, and it was hard to see. However, there was a light in the distance and Dave ran towards the light. It was the opening to the cave. He soon reached it and ran out into the open. It was day. They had been in the tunnel for the entire night.
Dave saw that he was halfway up the hill in the forest, and he could see the rooftops of the town in the distance. He made his way down the hill as fast as he could. He was very tired after all the crawling and running but the thought of Phil being in danger kept him going.
He finally made his way to the foot of the hill and was going to search for a way out of the forest when he heard voices.
He hid behind a rock, and crept slowly to peek around it. Suddenly, there came a sound just behind him.

He turned around quickly and found himself face to face with a large dog. He got the shock of his life, but not quite as bad as when the dog started barking. He stumbled backwards and fell on his back, with the dog standing over him. He closed his eyes and used his hands to shield himself from the dog, and to push the dog away.
There were footsteps as someone came running over to where the dog was. Dave opened his eyes and looked up to see a pair of kind eyes looking at him, and realized that he was looking at Detective Gordon.
Detective Gordon patted Rusty on the head and radioed the other officers that he had found one of the boys.
Dave looked around to see the other police officers with their dogs. Detective Gordon helped Dave up and helped him to the patrol car. Dave was glad to be rescued and in safe hands, but he felt guilty for leaving his best friend behind. He could not help but wonder what had happened to Phil.
In his mind, he could hear Phil shouting for help.

When they reached the station, Dave saw his parents and Phil's parents. They were relieved that Dave was alright, but also very concerned that Phil was still in danger. It seemed that after the boys did not go home for dinner, their parents got worried and called the police. After Dave had a chance to get some food and drink, and got some strength back, he started to tell Detective Gordon about what happened.
When Dave finished his story, Detective Gordon nodded his head and showed him the pictures of two men. Dave immediately recognized one of them as the man who was chasing Phil and himself. He did not manage to see the face of the man in the tunnel. He found out from Detective Gordon that the men were wanted for a series of crimes including armed robbery, smuggling and kidnapping. Also, they would not hesitate to use Phil as a hostage to negotiate terms, and would not hesitate to harm Phil if they needed to.
As Dave heard this, his eyes opened wide in shock and surprise. Phil and Dave had stumbled upon their hideout, and now, Phil was in the clutches of two very dangerous men. Before Dave could do or say anything, Detective Gordon got up and motioned for Dave to follow him.
He asked Dave to lead the police to the hideout quickly as Phil was in serious danger.

Soon, Dave was leading a team of police officers together with Detective Gordon. Detective Gordon had another team of officers going to the hill where the cave was located, to cut off any escape attempts by the two thugs. As they were driving towards the forest in a patrol car, Dave was hoping that Phil would be alright. He felt that he should not have left him alone with the two thugs, but he had no choice. It was either that, or both of them would be in their clutches right now, without the police being able to find them. Not long later, they reached the edge of the forest and it was impossible to drive any further. They had to continue on foot. During the escape from the tunnel, Dave dropped the map and now had to find the hut again purely by memory. A few times, he made some wrong turns and they had to retrace their steps. That wasted precious time. However, eventually, the group came across a path which Dave found very familiar, that led them to the hut. When they went in, there was no sign of the two men or Phil. The hole in the ground had already been covered up, and the footprints were gone. There was no evidence at all that either Phil or the two men were ever there. It was as though it never happened at all. Had it all been only a dream?

Detective Gordon wasted no time in getting some of his men to dig, and slowly, they uncovered part of the opening to the tunnel. However, none of the men were able to fit into the tunnel this time, and Detective Gordon was not about to make Dave go through the whole ordeal of crawling through it again.
Suddenly, Detective Gordon received a call from the team that was heading towards the cave. It seemed that they found a shoe belonging to a boy.
Leaving the other officers at the hut, Detective Gordon and Dave made their way to the hill, and to the cave.
Once there, Dave saw that it was indeed Phil's shoe, but he did not like what he saw. There were bloodstains on the shoe...
Rusty the police dog, was trusted with the job of finding Phil. He sniffed the shoe and proceeded to trace Phil's scent through the cave. The rest followed closely behind.
All of a sudden, Rusty stopped. He had lost the scent, and in front of them was a wall of rock. There was no other way around it.
They could not go on.
Then they heard it. A faint sound coming from within the wall of rock...

Dave recognized Phil's voice immediately, and started calling excitedly to Detective Gordon. They all started shouting to Phil, hoping that he could hear them. However, they were all just as curious and confused as to how Phil and the men managed to get in, since there did not seem to be any way in.
They tried searching for an opening somewhere, and tried running their hands over the wall, and overturning the rocks to see if there was a secret button or a device which could open the wall, but there was no such luck.
They tried shouting to Phil to tell them how he got in, but either he could not hear them, or they could not understand what he was trying to say. It was a very tense moment as the sun was about to set soon. This would mean that it would get very cold and damp in the cave, and Phil did not have any warm clothing with him. He could freeze to death in there.
As time ticked by, they began to lose hope. Detective Gordon and Dave stood there with their heads hung low in desperation and resignation. A soft breeze was blowing through the cave and Dave shivered with the cold.
Suddenly, Dave froze. He thought of something that might save Phil!

Dave remembered during the escape through the hot and stuffy tunnel that at one point, for a brief moment, there was a gentle breeze blowing across the tunnel at them. That must mean there was another opening somewhere along the inside of the tunnel that neither Phil nor himself noticed. Dave whispered to Detective Gordon about this idea, and Detective Gordon thought carefully.
Detective Gordon gave instructions for Dave to go back down the tunnel, but this time, he was to take a flashlight and Rusty along with him for safety. Dave hesitated, as he did not like the idea of going down the tunnel again, but the thought of his best friend being in danger gave him determination and courage.
Dave went to the part of the cave where he and Phil had crawled out of the tunnel. This time, Rusty and Dave went down together, and with the flashlight, he could finally see inside the tunnel. He was also glad that he had Rusty for company.
After what seemed like an eternity, he came to where he had felt the breeze and there was indeed another opening. He went through the opening and found that there was a second tunnel that led right to the cavern where Phil was sitting. Phil was cold, tired, hungry, and in pain, but was happy to see Dave. There was no sign of the two men at all, but Phil overheard them saying that they would be returning soon to get him, so Dave had to get Phil out quickly before the men came back and caught them trying to escape.
