Once there were two mice. --从前有两只老鼠。
They were friends. --它们是好朋友。
One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. --一只生活在乡村，而另外一只生活在城市。
After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, "Do come and see me at my house in the country."
--几年之后，乡村的老鼠碰见了城市的老鼠，它问：“请到我乡下的家里做客吧。”
So the City mouse went. --因此城市的老鼠去了。
The City mouse said, "This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city." --城市的老鼠说：“你这里的食物不好吃，房子也不漂亮。为什么你住在田野的土洞里面？你应该和我一起生活在城市里面。这样你会住在用石头搭建的好房子里面。你也会吃到好的食物。你必须来，到城市来，到我家做客。”
The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. --乡下的老鼠到城市老鼠家里做客。
It was a very good house.--是座漂亮的房子。
Nice food was set ready for them to eat. --美味的食物早早的以为它们准备好了。
But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. --就当它们开始享受美食的时候传来了一声巨响。
The City mouse cried, " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away quickly and hid. --城市的老鼠惊叫：“快跑！快跑！猫来了。”它们立马跑开躲了起来。
After some time they came out. --过了一会安全了，它们偷偷的出来。
When they came out, the Country mouse said, "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid." --当它们出来，乡下的老鼠说：“我不喜欢住在城市里。我喜欢住在田野的土洞里面。因为贫瘠但是快乐的生活远比富足但是日夜担惊受怕的生活要好。”
