我绝望地呻吟了下，回答我的却是从床底下传来的一下呻吟！我额头上的泠汗直往下冒。真是生不如死。不久我听到在我房间里有沉重的脚步声--像是大象的，对我来说--不像是人类的。但它却像在离开我的身边--从这点上说对我是安慰。我觉察到它在向门移动--不需要打开门闩或钥匙就穿了过去--接着在阴暗的走廊里徘徊，当它经过时，地板和托梁嘎吱嘎吱作响--随后寂静又一次取代了这一切。





  I groaned .An answering groan came from the foot of the bed!Beaded drops of sweat stood upon my forehead.I was more dead than alive.Presently I heard a heavy footstep in my room --the step of elephant,it seemed to me --it was not like anything human.But it was moving from me -there was relief in that.I heard it approach the door-pass out without moving bolt or lock-and wander away among the dismal corridors,straining the floors and joists till they creaked again as it passed - and then silence reigned once more.
