Hawaii Then and Now
Hawaii has only been an official U.S. state since 1959, but it's hard to imagine a time when it wasn't a part of the American lifestyle. Our own little piece of paradise, the archipelago -- made up of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles -- is a land of exotic dress and dances while still populated by good ol' American folk. But it's changed in many ways since becoming our 50th state -- and stayed the same in many others. Here: Waikiki Beach in 1954.
