The 2010 Asian Games
On the heels of its Shanghai international expo, China lit up the skies again with spectacular opening ceremonies for the Asian Games in Guangzhou (last held four years ago in Qatar). With world-class athletes from Afghanistan to Yemen taking part in events including familiar sports to more exotic ones like dragon-boat racing and Go chess, the Olympics-sanctioned event is the second-biggest sporting event in the world, second only to the Olympics themselves. Here: Fireworks light up the night sky for the opening ceremonies.
