星期三的晚上，我们去了市政厅。 那是一年的最后一天，一大群人聚集在市政厅的大钟下面。再过20分钟，大钟将敲响12下。15分钟过去了，而就在11点55分时，大钟停了。那根巨大的分针不动了。 我们等啊等啊，可情况没有变化。突然有人喊道：“已经12点零2分了！那钟已经停了！”我看了一下我的手表，果真如此。那座大钟不愿意迎接新年。此时，大家已经笑了起来，同时唱起了歌。

1、welcome
1）感叹词（interj.），迎接时打招呼用语

On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.
in the evening晚上    on Wednesday evening星期三的晚上(具体的一天，介词on)
Town Hall 市政厅
It was the last day of the year.表达为New Year’s Eve.
a large crowd of people = a large number of people = a great many people  许多人，一大群人
It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time.   
strike→ struck → struck
1）敲，打   strike twelve敲响12点
Strike while the iron is hot.（谚语）趁热打铁。 iron ['aiən] 烙铁
2）施以（打击）The man struck him a heavy blow.
3）碰撞  The ship struck against the rock = The ship struck on the rock.
rock [rɔk] n. 岩石
4）擦（火柴） strike a match 点火柴
5）突然想到某人，某个主意（occur to） A good idea struck me. = A good idea occured to me.
be struck by被打动 I was struck by its beauty.
6）n.罢工  be on strike在罢工   go on strike = go out on strike举行罢工
in twenty minutes' time = in twenty minutes 20分钟之后

关键句型：表时间的介词at, in, on, from---till, during, not---until等用法
At  1）在某时刻，时间等之前  Lunch was at one o’clock.

本文难点：对疑问句的两种不同否定的回答
Is there any tea in the pot?  There isn’t any tea in the pot. = There is no tea in the pot.

Is there anybody at the door?  There isn’t anybody at the door. = There is nobody at the door.
Is there anything in the box?  There isn’t anything in the box. = There is nothing in the box.
