The US has long described the Haqqani group as a major threat. Based in Pakistan's tribal regions with links to Al Qaeda, it's blamed for growing violence in east Afghanistan and high-profile attacks in Kabul. The US has been putting pressure on Pakistan for a long time to curb it and the US goverment came under political pressure from congress to add the Haqqanis to the terrorist blacklist.
