拉夫列茨基是一个贵族，但生活很不幸，童年孤单，长大之后又娶了一位背叛他的妻子。丽莎也是一位千金小姐，她默默地爱着拉夫列茨基，他也默默地爱着她。当然，丽莎的母亲是不会同意的，他们爱得那么苦。

就在他们快要有结果的时候，拉夫列茨基的妻子回来了，她乞求他的原谅，并带回了他们的女儿阿达。拉夫列茨基无奈地接受了这一现实。拉夫列茨基的妻子很快还是走了，丽莎出家了。

又是多年以后，已迈入老年的拉夫列茨基独自在丽莎家的花园里静坐，那是一个美好的夏夜。虽然丽莎走了，但是这座宅子还是充满着活力，丽莎的妹妹和他的许多朋友在其中狂欢，青春的欢乐深深触动着拉夫列茨基。“就让我燃尽吧，孤独的老年！”

最后丽莎和拉夫列茨基还是重逢了，只是像陌生人一样擦肩而过。在那两人并行，却面向不同方向的一瞬间，丽莎长长的睫毛抖动了一下，至于她此时心里在想着什么，只可意会不可言传。
