亚当斯于1959年11月7日出生在加拿大安大略省的金斯顿，父母是英国外交官。
由于父母从事外交工作，亚当斯小时就周游列国，其中包括英格兰、以色列、法国、葡萄牙和奥地利。
1973年亚当斯一家定居于加拿大的维多利亚。
1975年，亚当斯辍学，开始追求自己的音乐梦想。那时他只有15岁。
音乐生涯·70年代
虽然年纪不大，但亚当斯已把自己所有的精力放在了音乐上，辍学后，他加入了乐队，开始在酒吧里演出。1977年，他所在的乐队Sweeney Todd发行了一张名为“If Wishes Were Horses”的专辑，并由他担任主唱。但是他的生活依然是艰苦的，他不得不经常靠打零工维持生活。
可正是在温哥华的一家唱片店打工时，他遇到了Jim Vallance，并与其开始了歌曲创作。回过头来看，这次偶然相遇成就了乐坛上的一对黄金搭档，为我们奉献了“Summer Of 69” “Heaven”等多首金曲。
