A new study has revealed that one in four lap dancers at nightclubs in UK has a degree and only joined the profession for the money.

The study conducted by experts from the University of Leeds, which includes interviews with 300 dancers, showed that all the women interviewed had finished school and gained some qualifications.

Almost 90 percent had at least completed a further education course, while one in four had undergraduate degrees. It also showed that just over one in three dancers were currently in some form of education, with 14 percent using dancing to help fund an undergraduate degree.

High income is the main reason for these women to choose the profession. The average dancer took home 232 pounds ($358)per shift after paying commission and fees to the nightclub, and most who work two to four shifts a week make an annual income of 24,000 pounds ($36,996)to 48,000 pounds($74,006).

Many of these lap dancers were aspiring actresses, models and artists who hoped to use lap dancing as a lucrative platform for breaking into their desired industry. Unemployed arts graduates who had been unable to enter their ideal careers since university also made up a sizeable proportion of the lap dancers interviewed.

"These women are incredibly body confident. I think there is something of a generational cultural difference," said Teela Sanders, one of the experts at Leeds

But the academics called for better regulation to improve dancers' safety, including the banning of private booths in clubs.
