Voice of My Heart

Zheng Min

Late this summer night

The voice of my heart

Is like a white crane

Flapping its wings to revive

The rice fragrance of white jade pin

Calling up names from memory

Drawing mystical signs

It is flying and swooping in my sky

Lingering, without any intention of leaving

Rich and white, from ancient time

Transformed into a white crane, occupying my sky

I cannot understand its signs, I cannot understand

How it can live so long, be so beautiful

So white, it despises death

One day it will become both a star of night

And a music inaudible to human ears

Swooping vigorously, flying towards me

Your voice and mine are communicating

In eternity, in the boundless darkness

Are your voice and my voice, our voices

(Michael and Suo Fung 译)

The Heart’s Voice

Zheng Min

On this night in midsummer

the heart has a voice

like a white crane that has suddenly flown over,

with its wings just awakened from deep sleep

to bring the rich scent of white tuberose

to call out remembered names

to mark out mysterious signs

it flutters, hither and thither, in my sky

lingering, reluctant to leave

luxuriant yet chaste, from antiquity

metamorphosed into a white crane, it seized my sky

I’m helpless to read its signs, unable to explain

such longevity, such beauty

such purity. Contemptuous of death

one day it is made into stars in a night sky

still filled with music unheard

madly whirling, swirling toward me

you, the voice in my heart cries out for

an eternal universe, in the darkness’ limitless depth,

a voice that’s yours, mine, ours
