Break away (from somebody / something)

1. 改掉；放弃
I was encouraged to break away from old forms and rules.（大家鼓励我破除旧形式和旧框框。）

2. 突然离开；突然挣脱：
The criminal broke away from the young policemen.（那名罪犯从年轻警察手里逃脱了。）

3. 与……决裂；从……退出
He broke away from all his old friends.（他和老朋友断绝了来往。）

“戒掉”这词除了break away之外，还有如下比较常见的几个说法：

1）give up：He gave up smoking and drinking to cure his disease.（为了治病他戒掉烟酒。）

2）quit：I've quit smoking.（我戒了烟。）
