　　家用器皿pot (for cooking)和kettle (for boiling water)都是经常在炉子上烤的，时间长了，它们的底部都会变黑。这个俗语的字面意思就是，pot嘲笑kettle黑，完全等同于中文里经常听到的
那句“乌鸦站在猪身上，别说别人黑”。对此，英文的解释是“Since the pot and the kettle are equally black from the cooking fire, the pot has not right to criticize the kettle”。在
含义上，也可以相当于另一个中文俗语“五十步笑百步”，用来描述那些指责别人犯错、而自己也犯着同样错误的人。
　　还有一个问题需要说明，按照这个句子的形式，“calling the kettle black”是“pot”的同位语，严格的翻译应该是“说壶黑的锅”。但语言学习的惯例是：语言从语法，语法从习惯。如果不特
指某人是这个“the pot calling the kettle black”，作为独立的句子使用也是可以的。
