口语练习游戏,和你的朋友一起玩 Have fun!

盲侠听声线 Blind Race - (for four or more people)
  • To start: the participants are divided into teams.
  • In each race, one pair from each team should compete. One in the pair should be blindfolded.
  • The goal is for the blindfolded person to walk to the finish line according to the instructions (in English) given by the other person in the pair. No one is allowed to touch the blindfolded person in the race (except in an emergency situation when someone may get hurt).
  • Before starting the race, the blindfolded participants should be spinned around a few times so that he/she does not know where he/she is heading.
  • Once the blindfolded person reaches the finish line, the next pair in the same team can start.
Some words to be taught to the participants to use before the game:
  • Turn, stop, back up, left, right, step, forward, backwards.
Once the participants have played it a few times, here are a few variations that can make it more interesting and more challenging:
  • Place objects in the playing area as obstacles.
  • The blindfolded person has to transport a ping-pong ball with a spoon to put into a bowl at the finish line (without touching the ball or the bowl with his hands).
  • The blindfolded person has to scoop up a ping-pong ball of a specified color (among different colored balls) from inside a bucket before transporting it to the bowl at the finish line.

简单问题 Simple Questions

Sometimes the hardest thing about practicing English by talking to foreign guests whom you don't know is to start. Here are a few simple exercises that you can do to at least get started. All you need to do in each is ask one question and listen to the answer. You don't need to continue the conversation.
  • 问时间 Ask for the time -
The following are listed from easier to harder. Start with a question that you are comfortable with. Do it with a few people. Once you are more confident, do a longer sentence/question - but don't ask the same person these questions!
    • "Sorry! What time is it?"
    • "Excuse me! What time is it?"
    • "Excuse me! Can you tell me the time please?"
After you get the answer, say "thank you".
  • 问路 Ask for directions -
The following are listed from easier to harder. Start with a question that you are comfortable with. Do it with a few people. Once you are more confident, do a longer sentence/question - but don't ask the same person these questions!
    • "Sorry! Where's the foreign teachers dorm?"
    • "Excuse me! Where's the foreign teachers dorm?"
    • "Excuse me! Can you tell me where's the foreign teachers dorm?" (Technically, the grammar of this question is wrong, but westerners often say it in conversational English.)
After you get the answer, say "thank you".

意见调查 Take a Survey

Even if you don't have friends with whom to practice English together, here is something that you can do alone: take a survey (asking English-speakers a few simple questions). This will help you since you can start by just reading the questions already typed or written out. If you have a friend who is also learning English, do it together! Here is what you need to do:
  • 调查前之预备工作 Prepare a survey
    • 设计问题 Design questions - you should not have too many questions because most people don't mind answering a few but not a lot of questions.
      问题例子 Sample questions :
      1. What is your favorite food?
      2. What is your favorite Chinese food?
      3. What food do you miss?
      4. Where are you from?
    • 预备调查表 Prepare survey sheet - draw a table with 4 columns, and put the questions as the headings (see below).
      No.Favorite FoodFavorite Chinese FoodMissFrom
      1
      2

      3

      .
      .
      .

      30

  • 调查步骤 Doing the survey -
    1. Start by saying, "Excuse me! May I ask you a few questions?"
    2. If the person says 'yes', then ask him/her the questions one by one. Ask the complete questions and not just 'favorite food?'. You can write the complete questions down and read them if you want. (But after you have done a few, you should know the questions by heart.)
    3. After the survey, say, "Thank you for your time!" If you cannot understand the person's answer, you can ask one of the following questions:
    1. Could you say that slowly please?
    2. Could you say that again please?
    3. Could you spell that for me please? In order for you to get enough practice, you should survey at least 30 people.

猜物品 Take turns guessing an object: - (for two or more people)

1. To start: one person can think of an object.
2. The other person can ask "yes-no" questions to guess what it is. (That means that the answer to the question is either yes, or no.)
3. Up to 20 questions can be asked (one at a time), and the person with the object in mind has to answer each question truthfully by saying "yes", or "no".
4. But it is good to add one possible answer: irrelevant. (This answer is to be given when the answer is neither "yes" or "no" for the question.)
5. When the object is successfully guessed, or when 20 questions have been asked, switch (a different person becomes the one who thinks of another object to be guessed).

广播剧 Radio Drama - (for two or more people)

Actually this is not a game but acting with your voices, just like people who are in radio dramas on the radio. Here are the main steps in getting it going:

1. Script - Find a script of a play or a drama that has the same number of characters your group has. If there are more characters than your group size, you can possibly have some group members take up two parts if some parts have very few lines. (For example, in our radio drama "A Christmas to Remember", two characters have very few lines: the father, and the Christmas tree salesman. So possibly, the person playing the boy can also play both the father and the salesman.) You can also have someone responsible for sound effects who also doubles as the minor characters.

2. Casting - Decide on who will play which character in the script chosen.

3. Reading - Have all the characters sit in a circle. Then starting from the beginning of the script, each character should read his/her own lines.

4. Memorizing - Each character should memorize his lines before the next practice. (Everyone should agree on how far to memorize - one scene each week should be a minimum so that if there are 4 scenes in the play, after 4 weeks, everyone should have his/her own part totally memorized.)

5. "Acting" - After a scene has been memorized, each actor/actress can then practice saying the lines from memory according to the script.

6. Performance - A date should be set ahead of time for the group to perform in front of an audience. This will give you a good incentive to work on it.

Note : If you have an English club at your school, this will be a great way to learn and practice English together.
