WeChat, the popular social networking mobile app, is coming to Windows desktop.
微信,流行的手机社交网络应用,即将发布Windows桌面版。
Developers are testing WeChat's Windows native client, according to 36kr.com, although no official release date is available at the moment.
This will bring WeChat to be fully cross-platform. It is currently available through iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Symbian. A native client for Mac users was released in February this year. Windows PC users can use WeChat through a webpage version.
A beta version of the new Windows client leaked online shows that in order to log in, users first need to scan a QR code using the WeChat app on their phones. The Windows client appears to be a simple text messaging and file sharing tool, although WeChat is much more powerful as a mobile app.
On the mobile platform, WeChat provides services including text messaging, hold-to-talk voice messaging, one-to-many messaging, photo and video sharing, mobile games, as well as mobile payment.
Developed by Chinese tech company Tencent, WeChat reported 468 million monthly active users during the third quarter of 2014.
