The quality of bottled drink-ing water in Shanghai is far from satisfactory,a recent citywide check by the muni-cipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision revealed.

　　More than 30percent of 114water products,inclu-ding "pure"water,mineral water and spring water,failed inspection.Most were products of small-and medium-size enterprises,said bureau spokesman Ji Jian.

　　Earlier this year,the state bureau conducted a similar check nationwide,discover-ing that 25percent of water products were substandard.

　　The state bureau ordered Shanghai and other local bureaus to focus on the quality of water in 19-liter plastic barrels used with water coolers.

　　Ji said the substandard products uncovered in the local inspection exceeded the national standard for bacteria,mold and nitrite content and failed to reach the standard for "purity."

　　"The substandard water may cause infection of the intestinal tract,"he said.

　　The 26substandard pro-ducts identified by the local bureau included Tianhe pure water produced by Shanghai Chuanzhong Pure Water Factory and Yulin pure drinking water produced by Shanghai Yulin Drinking Water Co Ltd.
